Excitement and anticipation filled the air on Saturday, August 23, as students in the RCCD-UCR Residential Scholars program arrived on the UC Riverside campus for Move-In Day. Beginning at 8 a.m., the line of cars wrapped around the parking lot as families helped their students unload belongings, officially kicking off an academic year full of promise. By noon, more than 300 students had settled into their new home.
The atmosphere was both emotional and celebratory. Many students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to live on campus, citing the unique chance to engage in college life while securing stable housing.
“This program is opening doors for me I never thought possible,” said Riverside City College residential scholar. “Having a place on campus means I can focus fully on my studies and worry less about where I’ll sleep at night.”
For others, the excitement came from being part of a community. “I can’t wait to meet new people and be part of campus life,” said a Moreno Valley College residential scholar. “This feels like the start of something big.”
Staff from UC Riverside and Riverside City College welcomed students with resource booths, swag, and helpful guidance. The collaborative spirit was evident as faculty, administrators, and volunteers worked side by side to ensure a smooth transition.
RCCD Chancellor Wolde-Ab Isaac, Ph.D., described the new housing complex as, “the twin towers of equity. This partnership is unique, as we now share two housing towers with UCR that are breaking down the barriers that once existed," underscoring the district’s commitment to student success. Interim Riverside City College President Eric Bishop, Ed.D., shared that “this was a dream come true to help our students ensure housing security.” Moreno Valley College President Kevin Besikof, Ed.D., added, “All of this work highlights RCCD’s united efforts to come together and make things happen for our students.”
Move-In Day not only marked a logistical milestone but also signaled the beginning of an amazing year for the RCCD-UCR Residential Scholars. With housing security, access to campus resources, and a supportive community, students are set to thrive both academically and personally.
