County Schools Superintendent to Deliver Keynote, Receive MLK Legacy Award

​Judy White, Ed.D., county superintendent of schools, will deliver the keynote address at Moreno Valley College's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast on Friday, January 17, 7:30 am, at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center.

Each year, local high school students compete in an essay competition for a chance to win scholarships. College students compete in a speech competition.

This year's theme is Sands of Time: The Need for a “Maladjusted" America. Students were challenged to identify any one paradox of political or social inequity that Dr. King addressed in one of his speeches on the American dream and then analyze how that type of issue still exists today. 

In 2018, White spearheaded a Unity Conference that provided an opportunity to come together as a community to address the role of educators, parents and community leaders as change agents in order to develop and implement strategies to assist students attain equitable access to resources, opportunities and services. In 2019, the conference became known as the Student Unity Conference which brought high school students together in order to hear from national speakers, attend informative workshops, and take part in team-building activities, share ideas, gain leadership insights, and develop communication skills to unlock their potential so as to create positive changes within their schools and communities.

“Dr. White is a transformational leader (and) she is gifted in forging strong collaboration relations with students, teachers, parents and members of the community," Robin Steinback, Ph.D., MVC president, said. “She is always focused on success. I have yet to be in a room with Dr. White where she hasn't extracted from us a commitment to do something different, to do something better on behalf of our community. I am sure she will inspire all who attend."

White was appointed by the Riverside County Board of Education to fulfill the remainder of Kenneth M. Young's term. In 2017, she was sworn in as the 12th Riverside County Superintendent of Schools. Previously, she was superintendent at Moreno Valley Unified School District.

She started her education leadership career in K-12 as a classified staff member assisting the principal at San Bernardino High School. She earned a teaching credential and taught in multiple settings within the San Bernardino City Unified School District. Her public school experience included roles as a principal, assistant superintendent and deputy superintendent within SBCUSD before being selected in 2011 as the superintendent of the Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD). During her six years working with the 3,400 employees and 33,000 students at MVUSD, White increased graduation rates in Riverside County's third largest district by 20.5 percent while leading the District to notable achievements and awards on the county, state and national levels. She earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Occidental College, a master's in Education from California State University, San Bernardino, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University. 

As the county superintendent, White oversees 23 education districts. She is a resident of Moreno Valley.​
