The RCCD Distance Education Department, in collaboration with Riverside City College’s Animation program, recently hosted a dynamic hybrid drawing workshop led by acclaimed Marvel comic artist, author, and UCR Professor John Jennings. The event was designed to bridge the gap between online and on-campus learners, fostering an inclusive and interactive experience for all students.
The workshop welcomed Distance Education students to campus for an in-person session while simultaneously offering Zoom access to on-campus and remote participants. Professor Jennings shared professional insights from his decades in the comics industry, demonstrated digital drawing techniques using his iPad, and spoke candidly about navigating the creative field as a Black artist. His presence offered students of color, particularly those in online learning environments, inspiration and meaningful representation in the arts.
“This workshop is a powerful example of how Distance Education is reimagining connection and inclusion for our online students,” said BuShell, Ed.D., Dean of Distance Education. “By offering these types of hybrid opportunities, we aim to ensure every student—regardless of modality—feels seen, supported, and part of the RCCD community.”
The session not only enriched the learning experiences of RCCD’s diverse student body, but also underscored the college’s commitment to equity, accessibility, and innovation in education.
“Seeing a celebrated artist like John Jennings share his story and technique was deeply motivating for our students,” said Will Kim, RCC Professor of Art and Director of RCC Animation. “The hybrid format allowed our online students—many of whom are Black and students of color—to engage meaningfully with the arts and with each other in a way that transcends physical boundaries.”
This initiative reflects RCCD’s ongoing efforts to provide high-impact, accessible programming to students across all platforms. Through collaborations like this, the college continues to create inclusive learning environments that empower and connect students beyond the traditional classroom.
