Norco College Launches LGBTQ+ Learning Community with Support from CTA Grant

Norco College is proud to announce the launch of a new learning community designed to support LGBTQ+ and Allied students, made possible through a grant written by Dr. Meghan Chandler and awarded by the California Teachers Association (CTA). Professor Jake Drainville a member of our LGBTQ+ Learning Community Workgroup helped to conceptualize the program, alongside, Ammanda Moore, Cameron Young, and Meghan Chandler. The funding comes from the CTA’s "LGBTQ+ Safety in Schools Grant and Scholarship Program in Honor of Guy DeRosa," a program dedicated to fostering inclusion, understanding, and respect for LGBTQ+ individuals in educational environments.

A Community of Support and Learning

Starting this fall semester, the LGBTQ+ Learning Community at Norco College will offer a unique academic and support experience tailored to the needs of LGBTQ+ students and their allies. The program will feature two LGBTQ+-themed English courses—ENG-1A taught by Professor Cameron Young, and ENG-1B taught by Professor Ammanda Moore—alongside a series of student support workshops throughout the 2024-25 academic year. These courses and workshops are designed to create a safe and inclusive space where students can engage with relevant literature, explore their identities, and connect with peers who share similar experiences.

Grant-Funded Initiatives

The grant from the CTA is instrumental in bringing this learning community to life. The "LGBTQ+ Safety in Schools Grant and Scholarship Program in Honor of Guy DeRosa" is named after a respected advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and education. The program's mission aligns perfectly with Norco College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The funding will enable the college to provide specialized resources, develop targeted curricula, and host workshops that address the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students.

A Commitment to Inclusion

“Creating a learning environment that recognizes and values the diverse experiences of all students is a priority for Norco College,” said Dr. Monica Green, President of Norco College. “This new LGBTQ+ Learning Community is a significant step towards ensuring that our LGBTQ+ students feel supported, understood, and empowered to succeed. We are grateful to the CTA for their generous support and look forward to the positive impact this program will have on our campus community.”

About the LGBTQ+ Themed English Courses

ENG-1A: English Composition—This course will focus on LGBTQ+ literature and themes, encouraging students to develop critical thinking and writing skills through the exploration of diverse voices and experiences.

ENG-1B: Critical Thinking and Writing About Literature—Building on ENG-1A, this course will delve deeper into LGBTQ+ literary works, fostering a deeper understanding of the issues and perspectives within the LGBTQ+ community.

Both of these courses will be taught by Ammanda Moore and Cameron Young, both allies of the LGBTQ+ community.

Workshops and Support Services

In addition to the themed courses, the learning community will host workshops aimed at providing students with the tools and support they need to thrive both academically and personally. These workshops will cover a range of topics, including mental health, identity exploration, and building supportive networks.

Looking Ahead

Norco College is committed to expanding its support for marginalized and underrepresented student groups. The LGBTQ+ Learning Community represents just one of many initiatives the college is undertaking to create a more inclusive and welcoming campus environment.
