RCC Program for Formerly Incarcerated Youth Receives Major Grant

There are many systemic barriers to educational attainment and economic mobility in the region served by RCC. These barriers are even more daunting for youth impacted by the juvenile justice system, particularly due to an overall lack of educational and social support within correctional facilities or in the community once these young people are released. Research has proven the positive impact that transitional services can have in mitigating the barriers these young people face, particularly in helping them reintegrate and reconnect with the community, education, and jobs.

“This investment from the California Wellness Foundation is a testament to their commitment to enhancing social and economic wellness," Launa Wilson, executive director, said. “The foundation's support of the Rising Scholars program is a game changer for the College, one that will provide opportunities for the most at-risk youth."

Over the next three years, the grant will enable the College to create transitional pathways to enrollment, onboarding, and ongoing academic and social support. Additionally, the College will formalize partnerships with the region's juvenile detention facilities in order to develop educational offerings. Finally, the grant will allow for partnership building and creating a community-based approach with wrap-around services to help justice-involved youth to succeed.
