RCCD Online Student Pantry Brings Fresh Produce and Support to Online Learners

Dozens of RCCD online students gathered April 19th for a special food distribution event held in the heart of downtown Riverside, where fresh produce and community spirit flowed freely. The Online Student Pantry, presented by RCCD Distance Education in collaboration with Back to the Grind, offered free fruits and vegetables to RCCD’s online student population—meeting a vital need for food access while fostering community and connection.
Held in April, the event transformed the back patio of the beloved local coffeehouse into a welcoming space for students. As the produce tables were stocked, students were greeted with smiles, encouragement, and an opportunity to connect with Basic Needs and Mental Health Supports.
“This is exactly the kind of support our online learners need,” said Shawna BuShell, Ed.D, event organizer. “So many of our students juggle work, family responsibilities, and school. This pantry not only provides access to healthy food—it reminds students that they’re seen, valued, and supported.”
The event is part of a growing effort within the Riverside Community College District to expand services and outreach to distance education students. By partnering with local businesses and nonprofits, RCCD continues to break down barriers and bring essential resources directly to the students who need them most.
“When we meet students where they are—whether online or in person—we’re not just providing food; we’re creating pathways to wellness and academic success. Events like these show that support doesn’t stop at the classroom door” stated Desiree Rivera, Supervisor, Basic Needs and Wellness at RCC.
Attendees expressed gratitude for the fresh produce and the sense of belonging the event fostered. One student shared, “I usually feel really isolated taking classes online. Today, I felt like part of something bigger. It really meant a lot.”
“Mental and physical health are deeply connected, and initiatives like the Online Student Pantry recognize that. By offering access to nutritious food, we’re helping to reduce stress and promote overall student well-being,” Tracy Bennett, Director, Health Services at MVC.
RCCD’s Distance Education team plans to continue offering events like this one, recognizing that academic success often depends on meeting students’ basic needs.
