The Riverside Community College District (RCCD) has been recognized by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges as a 2025 Excellence in Energy and Sustainability Award winner. RCCD received the distinction of Best Overall District – Large for its innovative Business Law and Computer Information Systems Reconstruction Project at Riverside City College, a project that demonstrates the district’s leadership in sustainable design, energy efficiency, and forward-thinking campus development.
The award highlights RCCD’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its facilities and long-term planning efforts while supporting student success through modern, high-performing learning environments. The project reflects a strategic approach to reducing environmental impact while enhancing instructional spaces that meet the evolving needs of students and the workforce.
“This recognition highlights the project’s commitment to sustainability through the adaptive reuse of outdated facilities into a high-performance, all-electric academic building that reduces embodied carbon and construction waste while preserving historic character. The facility achieved LEED Gold certification and serves as a transferable model for sustainable campus modernization” said Hussain Agah, Associate Vice Chancellor of Planning and Development. “Through intentional design and sustainable practices, we are creating environments that serve our students today while preserving resources for future generations.”
The Excellence in Energy and Sustainability Awards honor California community college districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in energy efficiency, sustainability practices, and environmentally responsible construction. RCCD’s recognition underscores its continued leadership in advancing sustainable infrastructure, commitment to social, environmental, and fiscal sustainability, and its dedication to serving the Inland Empire through responsible growth and development.
