RCCD Study Abroad Student Spotlight: Adam Bahrawy

Norco College student Adam Bahrawy, a Game Design major now in his second year, spent part of his summer in Tokyo through the Riverside Community College District’s Study Abroad Program. After completing his first year of college, Adam saw the program as the perfect chance to gain real-world experience and strengthen his resume, particularly with hopes of interning in Japan, home to some of the most successful video game companies in the world.

Preparing for the trip took both planning and determination. Academically, Adam felt confident managing the workload, and financially, his parents helped cover program costs while he saved up earnings from his job at The Corral to support himself abroad. Personally, he knew the most significant challenge would be living away from his family for the first time. “There wasn’t a way to brace for this; it was just something I had to tough out,” he said.

Daily life in Tokyo offered a mix of class or internship hours in Shibuya and free time to explore the city. Adam often adventured through Tokyo’s neighborhoods using the train system or immersed himself in Japanese language and culture through books and television. One of his favorite experiences was a weekend trip to Kyoto with a friend. As a lifelong fan of gaming and anime, he was thrilled to stumble upon the many pop-up shops, events, and promotions that seemed to appear everywhere.

Looking back, Adam says the program not only gave him unforgettable memories but also helped him grow academically and personally. “I feel I’m a more capable student and person, and I’ve got a stronger resume to back it up,” he said. His internship, though challenging at times, became one of the most valuable parts of the experience. It taught him the importance of accountability and leadership—lessons that will stay with him long after the program. For students considering a similar path, Adam offers one piece of advice: be ready for the unexpected. “Preparation is important, but adaptability is even more so. Above all else, enjoy yourself and have fun—because those memories will stay with you for a very long time.”
