RCCD Workforce & Economic Development Showcases Sustainability through Apprenticeship Data Storytelling at ABA Convening
12/05/2024
Riverside Community College District (RCCD) Workforce & Economic Development staff took center stage at the Apprenticeship Building America (ABA) Convening, held in mid-October at the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Frances Perkins Building in Washington, D.C. Representing RCCD, Debra Mustain – Dean Community Partnerships & Workforce Development, Jason Kennedy, and Leah Pineda joined Charles Henkels the Executive Director from the LAUNCH Apprenticeship Network. Both RCCD and LAUNCH collaboratively presented on the topic, "Setting the Stage for Sustainability through Apprenticeship Data Storytelling."
The presentation highlighted RCCD’s commitment to program sustainability through innovative apprenticeship strategies. The focus was twofold:
-
- Pre-Apprenticeship Programs: Exploring traditional building trades and how RCCD supports pathways into high-demand careers.
- New and Innovative Apprenticeship Programs: Showcasing emerging opportunities in sectors beyond the traditional trades, emphasizing creativity and adaptability to meet workforce demands.
“Storytelling is a powerful tool, especially when paired with robust data,” said Jason Kennedy, Director of Workforce & Economic Development Projects at RCCD. “By sharing our apprenticeship successes, we demonstrate the critical impact these programs have on individuals, industries, and communities, ensuring their sustainability for future generations.”
The ABA Convening brought together over 200 leaders from across the country, including representatives from workforce development organizations, community colleges, and industry partners. Participants engaged in plenaries, informational sessions, and regional meetings designed to advance apprenticeship strategies nationwide. RCCD’s role in presenting during this prestigious event underscored its leadership in the apprenticeship field.
Additionally, the timing of RCCD’s presentation aligned perfectly with exciting news: the district’s acceptance into the Apprenticeship Ambassador Initiative, a recognition by the U.S. Department of Labor for RCCD’s excellence in promoting and expanding apprenticeships.
“Being part of the Apprenticeship Ambassador Initiative is a testament to the hard work and vision of our team,” said Leah Pineda, RCCD Student Success Specialist. “Our goal is not only to sustain but to innovate apprenticeship pathways that drive economic growth and provide life-changing opportunities for our students.”
The event was also an opportunity to connect with national peers and explore best practices in apprenticeship implementation. RCCD’s collaboration with the LAUNCH Apprenticeship Network continues to drive forward-thinking initiatives and strengthen partnerships.
For RCCD, this moment at the ABA Convening was about more than sharing successes;
it was about setting the foundation for the future. From traditional building trades
to cutting-edge industries, RCCD remains steadfast in its mission to create sustainable,
impactful workforce programs.
