RCC's Model United Nations team takes home Distinguish Delegation awards and met with German President Stienmeier. Students from Riverside City College competed in a weeklong competition at the Model United Nations Conference at Erfurt University in Germany. The team, consisting of 12 students, won two Distinguished Delegation awards while representing Chile and Kuwait at the conference. The team also met with Frank-Walter Stienmeier, honorable president, Federal Republic of Germany.
This year's Model United Nations team was one of the youngest in the history of the program, according to Dariush Haghighat, Ph.D., professor, Political Science and Model United Nations advisor. Four of the team members are under 18 years of age, and two skipped the last two years of high school in order to enroll at Riverside City College.
Four team members — Jacob White, Marwah Ghouli, Jake Sonia Langarica and Danyah Ghouli — were recognized by their peers as the most outstanding delegates in their respective committees.
The MUN team met with President Stienmeier when he visited the competition in Erfurt. The MUN team and Stienmeier's interaction was captured by new outlets and shared on the Germany National TV.
“President Steinmeier engaged our RCC MUN team in a diplomatic discussion and wrote about it on his Instagram," Haghighat said. “This was an amazing experience for our students."
